For Our Survival Coming Soon…
For Our Survival examines the actions of the Federation of Ogoni Women’s Association (FOWA), the women-led arm of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) in Nigeria since 1992- to the present day. The women fought alongside their community to contest the Nigerian government’s claim to ownership of their land and held multinational oil companies like Shell accountable for their egregious actions against their land and people including causing widespread environmental pollution and promoting human rights abuses. I examine issues of the impact of colonialism on Black women, the violence of multinational oil corporations on Black women’s bodies, and the unique nonviolent methods Ogoni women employed.
